When you get married, your tax situation changes. Your marital status as of December 31 determines your tax filing options for the entire year. State law determines whether you are married. If you’re married at year-end, you have two filing status choices:

Be aware that 2021 electronically filed tax returns that require taxpayers to reconcile advance Premium Tax Credit payments on Form 8962 will be rejected this year if the form is missing. Taxpayers and practitioners can simply complete a new tax return, including the required line amounts, attach the Form 8962, and re-file using e-file to correct the issue.

Taxpayers generally have to start taking withdrawals from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA), Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) IRA, Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRA, or retirement plan account when reaching age 72 (73 if you reach age 72 after Dec. 31, 2022). These withdrawals, called required minimum distributions (RMDs), are the minimum amounts you must withdraw from your account each year.
